(agk) Library – Dec 2020
Basic knowledge about first aid and low-resource care does not change very much over time. However, sometimes basic facts change, or general consensus changes. On certain topics there are differences of opinion.
For these reasons, documents in this library will change over time. Proposed changes are staged on this page. To propose a change, email

First Aid Handbook
- Choking: Consider abdominal thrusts only (removing adult back blows), per current American Heart Assoc guidelines.
- Rape: Consider adding numbers and recommendations for using hotlines.
- Mental Health Emergency: No-harm contracts do not work. Investigate whether the recommended no-harm agreement works. Consider a revision that keeps it simple, but adds an IPS or eCPR orientation, basic material and social health problem-solving, and how to use resources like hotlines and mobile assessment.
Common Simple Emergencies
- Comprehensively evaluate antibiotic choices. Harmonize with New Where There Is No Doctor unless divergence can be justified.
- Consider linking to relevant Hesperian healthwiki page from bottom of most topics.
- 6.04 Innocuous Ingestions: Syrup of Ipecac may no longer be considered a safe general treatment. Confirm whether it should be retained or removed.
- 6.05 Regional Poison Control Centers: 1-800-222-1222 should suffice. Consider connecting to New Where There Is No Doctor’s more comprehensive poisoning advice, particularly with respect to opiates, other meds, and pesticides.
Fact sheets
- First aid kit: Consider reminder to carry personal snack, water, jacket, and change of socks.
- How to take care of a sick person:
- Consider adding positioning and other care for dyspnea.
- Consider reinforcing infection control.
- Consider describing basic quarantine measures.
- Consider building up into a Sick Care at Home handbook, if something readymade and concise can’t be found.
