Choose a buddy with PEARL

Time limit: 10 minutes.
Small group facilitator says

PEARL helps you know yourself and your buddy so you can have each others’ backs. It’s like an advance directive: “here’s what I’m like, what I want to do, what I need/like, what I don’t want in my life, and how to talk to me.”

Physical vulnerabilities and assets

Emotional vulnerabilities and assets

Arrest/Assault risk

Role you want to play in this protest

Loose ends if arrested or in hospital

It’s a good idea to start with the Roles you want to play. We learn this stuff through coming back to these questions with a buddy again and again, before and after stressful, boring, and thrilling times.

Practice: buddy time!

Small group facilitator

reminds students they’re welcome to opt out of practice sessions for any reason/at any time.

Students

Get into pairs. You have 5 minutes to get to know each other.

Debrief

Small group facilitator asks

Did you find PEARL useful?

Small group facilitator asks

Are you and your buddy a good match? Why/why not?

Spokescouncil

When the 10 minutes are up, trainer calls small groups into council.

Spokesperson from each small group shares 1-2 insights from their group.

Several buddy pairs can form a squad. Here’s a sample meeting agenda to organize that.
